Funny Classroom Stories

A very wise man (Solomon) once said that a merry heart does good like a medicine. Here is some medicine.

I was preparing my 7th grade science students for their final exam. We were going over the topics from the year that would be on the exam. I had included one of the questions from a previous test that a lot of students had missed the first time hoping to reinforce the concept. The question asked, "Which of the following is not a form of precipitation?" The answer choices were: rain, snow, groundwater, and hail. Many students had incorrectly chosen hail. I thought that since these were Florida kids, maybe they didn't know what hail was, so I asked the class, "What is hail?" From the back of the classroom, a sweet girl from Georgia named Coco raised her hand. I said, "Okay, Coco. What is hail?" She replied in her beautiful Georgia drawl, "Why Miss Lawless, that's a place where bad people go!"

That is cute, it reminds me of one of those chain emails that someone sends around with the funny sayings that all the students say. I teach K-5 so you can imagine what all they do and say. One sticks in my mind and still happens ever so often. I took Kindergarten children into the lab and our first day was spent going over the parts of the computer. Everyone did great with the screen, keyboard, and even the CPU. When we got to the mouse I told everyone to put their hands on their mouse and every single child in the class put their hand over their mouth. I could not help but to laugh and as this was all happening the principal of the school was walking through. She too thought it was funny. I will never forget all those little kids doing that, it was a kodak moment.

That's funny. Kindergartenners are interesting people. You have my utmost respect. I taught K/1 for about two months and didn't think I would survive. The communication barrier is very real.

It reminds me of the time I probably scarred one of my 7th grade classes for life. I used to work part time at JCPenney on the switchboard. I would sit and wait to answer the phone and while I waited, I graded papers. It was a wonderful arrangement. I was talking to one of my classes about it and told them that I moonlighted at the mall on Friday nights for extra income. The looks on their faces was priceless.

I can only imagine, I wonder what they went home and told their parents :-)  K/1 is sort of rough sometimes.  I recommend with technology that the only thing they do is practice letters or use websites such as LearnNC or Starfall until they get really comfortable with the keyboard and actually learn some letters.  Then after Christmas you can usually do a little more with them.  Your right though the communication barrier is truly reality.  It was very hard the first time I took Kindergarten into a lab and tried to do anything with them.  Now I only teach grade levels with their teachers cooperation so it makes it much easier.  I prefer doing small groups with K-2 and we get a lot more accomplished.  I had Kindergarten typing sentences and making small books this year.   Katrice Thomas
