Creating a PODcasting Squad

In my district some of the schools have created a student led “Pod” Squad to give students a greater role in technology integration.  (Kind of like the old AV teams of long ago) I loved the idea! So I approached my administration and they are totally on board with this venture.

I’m looking for anyone that has successfully (or not successfully) incoorporatated a student lead squad like this in your school….what worked, what didn’t.

The POD Squad would be taught how to use digital editors and mixers for podcasting, presentations, digital video, etc by me (the Media Specialist) and our schools technology repair person. My hope is to enable the students to create, edit, troubleshoot and help teachers.

I would love to hear from those of you that have students involved with technology in a similiar manner.

I wasn't directly involved

I wasn't directly involved in this project but I did have a co-worker that did something very similar with what was considered a documentary group.  Things they did was bring people in from the community they interviewed them. They were in charge of coming up with questions, using the camera, then the instructor helped them learn how to organize it into a podcast and post it.  Also they created a lot of original podcast themselves.  They would recreate a story by acting out the parts of the people and videotape it.  It worked out really well.  My co-worker did this for two years and the kids absolutely loved it.  After a little while they could do everything by themselves.  The big thing was making sure they took the time to plan out what they wanted to ask, what the podcast was about, and scripting it all out.  They knew what tools they had to use and then worked on it all.  Unfortunately their website is no longer up or I would pass on the link, the co-worker left and got out of education.  I feel like based on what I heard about his experience you can definitely work on a POD squad and it will work out fine.  The kids really get involved and I know it was fun for them to do it.  Good Luck and keep us posted on how it goes!

Last year a group of 25

Last year a group of 25 teachers in our district formed the "Podsquad." They successfully integrated the use of podcasts into the existing curriculum as our newest form of student presentation. Teachers learned how to use Audacity, PhotoStory 3 and some even mastered writing their own RSS feed. We hope to continue and expand this project during the 2008-09 school year.
